Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced new plans to widen and upgrade a key bridge that leads to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport. The plan will use an innovated construction approach to ensure fast completion without the disruption of current traffic.
The project is designed to increase traffic flow and reduce overall journey times to and from the terminal. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said: “The project involves widening the existing bridge from three to four lanes by constructing a new bridge.”
The new bridge will use an innovative system of steel box girders and will be 171 metres in length with a main span of 70 metres. Alongside the bridge, improvements will also be made to road pavements, the surrounding landscaping, and street lighting for safety and visibility.
Once the project is completed, RTA estimate that the bridge’s overall capacity will increase from accommodating 4,200 vehicles per hour to just over 5,600 vehicles per hour. This would be an increase of 33%.
RTA has also made improvements to Airport Street in recent years, especially from its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Casablanca Street. Developments included new bridges, tunnels, and upgrades to surface-level infrastructure. One of the new improvements was a single-lane bridge with direct access to Terminal 3.
Al Tayer noted RTA’s commitment to further developing Dubai’s road infrastructure along key corridors, especially those close to Dubai International Airport. Al Tayer noted the aims of providing sustainable solutions that strengthen Dubai’s competitiveness as a global hub for travel and international events. Statistics shows that in 2024, Dubai Airport saw huge growth with over 92 million passengers served.
Al Tayer finished by saying: “The expansion will boost street capacity, improve safety, and shorten journey times during peak hours.”
